From Diversity to Inclusion

An Interview with Jessie Lee: From Diversity to Inclusion

Jessie Lee

Q: Has the nonprofit sector made progress in diversity?

Jessie: Yes, we have come to an understanding on the value of diversity. It is an asset. But there’s a bigger challenge: Inclusion.

Q: How is that different and what can we do about it?

Jessie: It’s one thing to invite the right people to the meeting, it’s another to hear what they have to say. We need to hear other voices. We need to listen for what’s not said. This is challenging.

Q: So, give me an example of your approach to solving this problem.

Jessie: I dig deeper. I use research to unearth trends and to find what others have discovered. This gives me a fresh perspective which I can share with the organization. I can help them discover the external factors that may impact their work and limit their capacity to deliver the right services to those who need them.

Q: Does this change the conversation?

Jessie: Yes, when I offer fresh ideas it cultivates a deeper dialog. I’m looking for innovation. If I can create space for dialog there is opportunity for breakthroughs.

Q: Innovation?

Jessie: Yes, we tend to think of innovation as the latest technology. But I’m talking about ideas that result from hearing fresh voices and perspectives. Innovation results in better, more inclusive strategic planning.

Q: What does inclusive strategic planning look like?

Jessie: The goal is to make sure everyone is heard. When someone participates in the conversation they have ownership in the outcome. Even if they don’t fully agree with a decision, they know they were part of the process. They have a voice.
